1,000 BOOKS

Program Overview

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless.

Read books to your newborn, infant, toddler, and/or preschooler

The goal is to have read 1,000 books before your precious one starts kindergarten

Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around the age of 5, you have more time than you think. So get started!

The key is perserverance. Make it exciting and fun!

How to Participate

Read with your child. Make sure to keep a record of any book that is being read to your child, including books read at storytimes, books read by teachers and even siblings.

Keep track of the titles of the books that you read with your child. In your 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten folder there are two types of book tracking log sheets. There is a tracking sheet with circles for your child to color or place a sticker on a circle for each book read. There is also a sheet for parents or guardians to write down the title of each book read.

Every time one of the log sheets is completely filled (meaning 100 books have been read), bring your 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten folder to the Library for your sheet to be stamped, for your child's photo to be taken with an achievement sign. and for your child's name to be moved up on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten tracking wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate?
Any child from birth until he or she enters kindergarten. You can sign up any child who has not yet entered kindergarten

How long will the program take?
The program will take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together.

How many of my children can participate?
All of them! As long as your children have not yet entered kindergarten. Reading as a family is a great idea! Older siblings even if they cannot sign up for the program can still help your younger children reach their 1,000 books goal by reading to them.

Can we count books that we read to our child before getting the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading/Information folder?
Unfortunately, no, you cannot. Your child's participation in the program will start the moment you sign up online and receive the 1,000 Books folder, so we would also like your reading logs to begin then as well. All the reading you have done with your child until then will be great practice, but will not count toward the Library's tracking of their books read.
